Going Rogue: Dragging Kink Into the Shadows [Community]
This article was originally posted on FearlessPress.com
Often those that participate in kink, BDSM, and alternative lifestyles like to think of themselves as social outlaws, people that live and love on the edge. They view themselves as renegades and outsiders, shirking the rule of mainstream society. And, in some ways, I suppose this is true. In comparison to mainstream culture, kink is still often misunderstood, shunned, and criminalized. However, while there’s still work to be done on improving how kink is represented and accepted in widespread culture, the BDSM communities have managed to create such massive, inclusive, and comfortable spaces for themselves that kink in and of itself hardly seems groundbreaking and intensely edgy anymore. Once one has discovered their local kink community, sites like Fetlife or Alt.com, or BDSM educational events, they can settle in to adapting to a new status quo that simply comes with a somewhat broader set of norms.
Inspiring Quotes
I LOVE good quotes and they can be great reminders in times of uncertainty or challenges. This is just a *fun* thread where we can all post some of our favorite quotes.
A Thought About Leadership from Seth Godin
This is from Seth Godin, one of my favorite writers, it’s a piece from a longer post
LEADERSHIP: Management is almost diametrically opposed to leadership. Management is about generating yesterday’s results, but a little faster or a little more cheaply. We know how to manage the world—we relentlessly seek to cut costs and to limit variation, while we exalt obedience.
Leadership, though, is a whole other game. Leadership puts the leader on the line. No manual, no rule book, no überleader to point the finger at when things go wrong. If you ask someone for the rule book on how to lead, you’re secretly wishing to be a manager.
Leaders are vulnerable, not controlling, and they are racing to the top, taking us to a new place, not to the place of cheap, fast, compliant safety.

Services Rendered: Fair Compensation for Educators
By: Sarah Sloane (originally posted on FearlessPress.com July/2011)
New educators, there is one simple fact that I want – nay, I NEED you to understand: nobody gets rich from teaching about sex and kink. Even the most successful sex educators in the US aren’t what most of us would call “wealthy”, and the great majority of us – even those that do this on a full time basis – aren’t making a substantial income out of our teaching & writing. Sex education is not something that is culturally valued in our society, and without that cultural sense of importance we will likely find that most organizations & stores will be unable to pay us what they (and we!) wish they could.
Poster Presentation Resources
NCSU Poster Information – http://www.ncsu.edu/project/
Psi Chi Poster Tips – http://www.psichi.org/
Helpful Hints – http://www.swansea-research.
Poster presentation recommendations:
- Display the title, author(s) and affiliation(s) prominently.
- Highlight the major elements that are covered in your poster abstract.
- Keep it simple! Posters should be designed to enhance conversation.
- If you have more information than can easily fit, prepare a handout.
- Tables, graphs, figures, etc. work great in poster presentations.
Presenters should prepare a handout of the information included in the poster, including the author(s), affiliation(s), and contact information, and whether or not the work can be cited. Some presenters will prepare a longer handout, providing more detail than could easily be displayed in the poster format. Presenters are responsible for preparing and copying handout(s) and bringing them on-site! Each presenter should bring at least 25 copies of their handout(s) and a sign-up sheet for people to request a copy if they run out.
